Lake Louise sits in the heart of Banff National Park, one of the world's most visited and most spectacular mountain destinations.
Whether you're finalizing your plans or have just confirmed your stay at Mountaineer Lodge, this page covers everything you need to arrive prepared. There's a lot to coordinate, from park passes and mountain weather to getting here, what to pack, and what to do.
About Lake Louise & Banff National Park
- Banff National Park is home to two towns: Banff and Lake Louise
- Lake Louise is known for its iconic lakes, epic hiking, and a quieter pace than Banff.
- Lake Louise is 45 minutes from Banff by car or shuttle. Most Lake Louise guests take a day trip to Banff.
- The Calgary International Airport (YYC) is 200 km from Lake Louise, approximately a 2-hour drive west on the Trans-Canada Hwy
- Parks Canada manages Banff National Park. Trail & road closures due to wildlife and rehabilitation can occur year-round.
- Before our guests head out on the trail (especially if they are with their dog), we recommend checking Parks Canada's dog-friendly trails for closures.
Why You Need a Parks Canada Pass
A National Park Pass is required when entering a national park in Canada. Everyone planning to visit Banff National Park, including Banff town and the Lake Louise area, requires a pass. Banff National Park entry and service fees help support visitor services and facilities, so with every visit, you are investing in the future of the Park. No Park Pass is required for the summer - June 19, 2026, to September 7, 2026.
For any dates outside of this period, a Banff National Park Pass is required. You can purchase it online or at the park gate on arrival. Passes are approximately $25 per day, depending on the number of people in your group.
Lake Louise Weather
Locals in Banff and Lake Louise like to say, "Don't like the weather? wait 5 minutes." What they mean is that the weather changes fast, sometimes for the better, sometimes it can snow in July. It's why we prepare for anything.
Lake Louise sits at 1,540 m elevation / 5,200 feet, and mountain weather can change fast in any season.
Summer (June to August): Features warm, sunny days and cool, brisk nights.
Highs 15-25° C / 60-78° F with Lows 1°-7° C / 34-44°F
UV exposure is higher at higher elevations.
Winter (November to March): Can be very cold on some days but that's often when the sun shines brightest.
Highs -6 to -10° C / 21 to 14° F with Lows -15 to -20°C / 5° to -4°F
The coldest months are December to February.
What to Pack
Because the mountains don't follow the forecast, we suggest packing for possible conditions, not the calendar.
We get this question a lot, and here are our quick answers.
- Layer up: mornings and evenings cool off quickly, even in July
- Windproof and water-resistant jacket: non-negotiable in any season
- Footwear with grip and ankle support: most scenery is accessed on foot, and you want a comfortable shoe with good grip for trail walking.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, refillable water bottle, small daypack
- Bear spray, if venturing on trails, is available to rent from Wilson Sports
- Pack a bathing suit so you can dip into the hot tub after a day outdoors
- There's no need to pack a lot of outdoor gear as Wilson Sports rents a variety of equipment year-round.
- The boot and mitt dryers in our Two Queen Lodge Room and Family Room make it easy to dry gear.

As early as possible, especially for the summer and ski seasons. Lake Louise is a small village with limited accommodation, and the most popular travel windows, July, August, and the Christmas holiday period, can book out months in advance. If your dates are flexible, shoulder seasons (May–June and September–October) offer more availability and a quieter experience. For peak season travel, booking 3–6 months out is not uncommon.
